Health Insurance Waiver

International students are required to purchase Student Health Insurance. However, sponsored students may be eligible for a waiver from this mandate.

If your sponsor provides you with their own health insurance.

No action is necessary. You will be automatically waived from SHIP for Penn State if a) your sponsor’s insurance policy has been approved, b) we have your active financial guarantee on file before the deadline, and c) you have no dependents in the US*

  • If you have dependents and your sponsor provides them with non-Penn State health insurance: you must contact the Student Health Insurance office and the Sponsored Relations office within 10 days of the dependents arrival in the US to request assistance with processing the waiver form. You will be required to complete the Dependent Waiver Application form for each dependent before the deadline. There are insurance requirements that must be met before a waiver can be approved.
  • If you have dependents and your sponsor DOES NOT provide them with non-Penn State health insurance: you must contact the Student Health Insurance office and the Sponsored Relations office within 10 days of the dependent's arrival in the US. Your dependents are required to carry insurance. The Student Health Insurance office will assist in coordinating insurance coverage for your dependents.

If your sponsor provides you with their own health insurance.

If your sponsor purchases the Student Health Insurance Plan for Penn State.

No action is necessary. You will be automatically enrolled in the SHIP for Penn State and the associated fees will be sent directly to your sponsor as long as a) you are registered for in person classes, b) we have your active financial guarantee on file before the deadline, c) you are not an American citizen*, and d) you have no dependents in the US*.

  • If you are an American citizen: you will NOT be automatically enrolled in SHIP for Penn State. Within LionPATH, navigate to the Health Insurance tab and under the current coverage year, select Waive/Purchase. Follow the additional steps to enroll.
  • If you have dependents and your sponsor pays for their Penn State health insurance: you must contact the Health Insurance office and the Sponsored Relations office as soon as possible. You will be required to manually enroll each of your dependents in the SHIP for Penn State before the deadline. Your sponsor will receive a bill for your and your dependents’ insurance premiums.
  • If you have dependents and your sponsor DOES NOT pay for their Penn State health insurance: you must contact the Student Health Insurance office and the Sponsored Relations office within 10 days of the dependent's arrival in the US. Your dependents are required to carry insurance. The Student Health Insurance office will assist in coordinating insurance coverage for your dependents.

If your sponsor purchases the Student Health Insurance Plan for Penn State.

No action is necessary. You will be automatically enrolled in the SHIP for Penn State and the associated fees will be sent directly to your sponsor as long as a) you are registered for in person classes, b) we have your active financial guarantee on file before the deadline, c) you are not an American citizen*, and d) you have no dependents in the US*.

  • If you have dependents and your sponsor pays for their Penn State health insurance: you must contact the Health Insurance office and the Sponsored Relations office as soon as possible. You will be required to manually enroll each of your dependents in the SHIP for Penn State before the deadline. Your sponsor will receive a bill for your and your dependents’ insurance premiums.
  • If you have dependents and your sponsor DOES NOT pay for their Penn State health insurance: you must contact the Student Health Insurance office and the Sponsored Relations office within 10 days of the dependent's arrival in the US. Your dependents are required to carry insurance. The Student Health Insurance office will assist in coordinating insurance coverage for your dependents.

If you purchase health insurance yourself.

You can visit http://www.firststudent.com/ to enroll yourself (and your dependents if applicable) in a plan of your choice. Please note that all Penn State students and their dependents are required to be covered either by the University’s insurance plan or an equivalent insurance policy. If you would like to enroll in a third-party plan of your choice that is not the Penn State Health Insurance Plan, you must contact the Health Insurance office to verify it meets the minimum requirements for coverage.

If you purchase health insurance yourself.

You can visit http://www.firststudent.com/ to enroll yourself (and your dependents if applicable) in a plan of your choice. Please note that all Penn State students and their dependents are required to be covered either by the University’s insurance plan or an equivalent insurance policy. If you would like to enroll in a third-party plan of your choice that is not the Penn State Health Insurance Plan, you must contact the Health Insurance office to verify it meets the minimum requirements for coverage.
