International Health Insurance

Faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad for university-affiliated purposes are covered by Penn State's international health insurance.

International SOS (ISOS)

ISOS is the university's international emergency assistance provider. All Penn State travelers are able to contact ISOS prior to their departure or while they are abroad for any health, safety, or security advice. Should you require medical assistance while you are abroad, you can contact ISOS and they can help you find and arrange quality medical care and take care of payment on your behalf through the university's international health insurance. Download a copy of Penn State's ISOS membership card.

Travelers can contact ISOS's 24/7 assistance center at +1-215-942-8478. Travelers are also highly encouraged to download the ISOS Assistance App, which helps you plan for travel, provides advice from medical and security experts, and can connect you with their nearest assistance center anytime/anywhere via call or text chat at the touch of a button. The Assistance App is free for all Penn State travelers and is available for download now.

Starr Insurance

The insurance, underwritten by Starr Insurance, is provided as a blanket policy and no special enrollment is required. Travel records in the Global Safety Network (GSN) database or through Education Abroad programs will be used to identify travelers and verify eligibility. Coverage is valid for the period of university-affiliated business as well as travel days associated with the trip, up to a maximum of 365 consecutive days.

If you contact ISOS prior to any medical service, they will manage payment on your behalf through the insurance and you should not incur any out-of-pocket expenses. ISOS has a direct billing agreement with Starr Insurance, eliminating the need for travelers to pay for covered medical expenses themselves, so long as the provider accepts ISOS's guarantee of payment.

While highly recommended, travelers are not required to coordinate with ISOS before receiving medical attention. Post-travel medical expense claims for reimbursement can also be made directly to Starr Insurance. Please contact Global Safety for post-travel claim assistance. Completed claims for reimbursement can be emailed to aciclaims@visit-aci.com. Claims must be submitted within 90 days of incurring any expenses. Please allow 30 days for Starr Insurance to process your claim.

Travelers planning to submit a post-travel claim for reimbursement should keep copies of all receipts, invoices, medical records, or medical authorizations, which may need to included when submitting a claim for reimbursement.

Coverage Highlights

• Up to $500,000 maximum for emergency injury, sickness, and hospitalization expenses.
• 100% of actual expenses for emergency medical evacuation.
• Up to $500,000 for emergency security evacuation.
• Up to $100,000 for emergency natural disaster evacuation.
• 100% of actual expenses for repatriation of remains.
• $0 deductible.

Personal Travel

Personal travel that is not in conjunction with university-affiliated travel is not covered by Penn State’s international health insurance policy. Employees and students planning travel for purely personal reasons (vacation, personal consulting, etc.) to international destinations are encouraged to purchase additional insurance coverage for their travel. Helpful information on international health insurance, including tips, term definitions, guides, and resources for comparing/purchasing insurance plans can be found at IAMAT | Travel Health Insurance 101.

Non-Penn State Participants

All external non-university participants must be specified and included in a group roster provided to Global Safety. Non-university participants who travel on a Penn State program can purchase coverage through the university's international health insurance policy as an external guest. It is the responsibility of the program coordinator to make sure that non-university participants are enrolled in insurance coverage by contacting Global Safety. The sponsoring college or campus assumes all liability for all non-university participants.
